Week 24 & 25

LITERACY

Writing:
In the last two weeks, the students learned how to write in a poem format. They learned what the word stanza means and how to organize their writing. The theme of the poem was friendship. First, I read the book "Don't Need Friends" to the class. The class discussion was about how the characters (a rat and a stray dog) changed their minds about having friends throughout the story. As a whole class, the students filled an anchor chart titled "How I Can Be A True Friend". Secondly, the class read a poem titled "Friends" that followed a pattern that the students would follow in their final copy. They thought about activities they enjoyed doing with their friends and two things that they would need to carry out the activities. The students picked four activities to write about and plugged it into the poem's stanzas.
The students continue to edit their sentences using the acronym CUPS to remind them about what to look for. CUPS stands for:
Capitals - Is there a capital at the beginning of your sentence? Are proper nouns capitalized?
Understanding - Does this make sense?
Punctuation - Does the sentence have the correct ending punctuation? Do you need a comma or apostrophe?
Spelling - Are all the words spelled correctly?

Spelling:
This week, the students continued to practice making a long vowel "U" sound with a new spelling patterns: UE. Word work activities this week were focused around the words: rescue, avenue, argue, tissue, value.  The oddball word was laughed and the bonus word was Tunisia.

______

The Grade 3s practiced their basic facts of -9 in the form of Mad Minutes. Their personal goal was to get more equations solved each day. On Thursday, we had our final Mad Minute of the week and all of the students improved on their scores compared to their scores on Monday. Way to go Grade 3s!

SOCIAL STUDIES

As the students are learning all about Tunisia. After we read each chapter, they jot down new information they have learned and (in partners) turn it into 3-4 sentences about each topic. In the last two weeks, 3D has learned about Tunisia's environment, how Tunisian people work together and Tunisia's goods and services. They have completed their slideshow about Tunisia and will be rehearsing and then presenting their slideshow to the class on Tuesday.
