Week 23

LITERACY

Book Study:
Two weeks ago, I read the book In My Heart by Jo Witek to the class to serve as inspiration for our upcoming writing project starting next week. This book explores a full range of emotions, describing how children describe how they feel physically, inside. The book uses language that is lyrical but also direct. The vocabulary allows children to practice articulating and identifying their own emotions.
After the reading, the students made a list of feelings they can feel in their hearts. On loose leaf paper students sketched out two feelings that they associate with the most. They had to show the following:
  •  how a feeling made their body feel (i.e. sweaty, heart beating, warm)
  • an animal that reminds them of that feeling
  • something in nature that is similar to the feeling, and
  • a colour that they associate to the feeling
They chose one feeling to write about for their final copy and tried to write their paragraph in a style similar to the author's.
Writing:
The students are learning how to edit their sentences using the acronym CUPS to remind them about what to look for. CUPS stands for:
Capitals - Is there a capital at the beginning of your sentence? Are proper nouns capitalized?
Understanding - Does this make sense?
Punctuation - Does the sentence have the correct ending punctuation? Do you need a comma or apostrophe?
Spelling - Are all the words spelled correctly?

Spelling:
This week, the students continued to practice making a long vowel "O" sound with two spelling patterns: OW and OA. Word work activities this week were focused around the words: boating, roamed, throat, snowman, lower.  The oddball word was who and the bonus word was valentine.

Congratulations to this students for reaching the next pitstop by reading a total of 3000 minutes!

MATHEMATICS

With their knowledge of 'stacking' and two digit/three digit addition with/without regrouping, students moved on to subtracting two digit/three digit numbers without regrouping. The students showed their addition by using place value blocks, drawings, expanded form (with number words/numerals)and using a standard algorithm:
  456
-232
______
3D students learned a new math game using a deck of cards called Snap to It! They had so much fun practicing their subtraction skills while playing against a partner.

The Grade 3s practiced their basic facts of -8 in the form of Mad Minutes. Their personal goal was to get more equations solved each day. On Thursday, we had our final Mad Minute of the week and almost all of the students improved on their scores compared to their scores on Monday. Way to go 3D!

SCIENCE

On Monday, the Grade 3s presented the Instrument they created over the weekend. When building the instrument the students had to make sure the instrument changed pitch and volume. I loved hearing all of the inventive names they gave their instruments like the Guitario, the Thing-a-Majig, the Squeaky Fart (this one got a few laughs), the Dingle Hopper, the Drumboreen, the Snap!Crackle!Pop! and the Flute Straw. What amazing creativity!

A few days later, the students were asked to get into a groups of three to create a simple tune with their instruments. They shared their tune with the class. The students put on amazing performances.

SOCIAL STUDIES

The students flew to a new destination this week, the country of Tunisia. After the students read a chapter, they get together with a partner and they write down facts that they learned about Tunisia  They add their findings to a Slideshow that includes pictures. This week, the students learned about the culture, traditions/celebrations and life in Tunisia (in the city and in the country.
