LITERACY Reindeer of the Year  Peer Editing: Final Copies: Reading to Grades 1/2: At the beginning of the week, I read the book  The Polar Express  by Chris Van Allsberg  to the class. All of the activities were based on this fictional story. On the second day, the students completed a recall activity in which they had to specify the characters, setting, problem and solution of The Polar Express . Next, they were asked to find the definitions of "Polar Express"-specific vocabulary in a dictionary. These words included harness, sleigh, peaks and conductor.      Reading:  Congratulations to this student for reaching the second pitstop by reading a total of 1200 minutes! LITERACY Reading:  Congratulations to this student for reaching the first pitstop by reading a total of 600 minutes!  Handwriting:   The students continue to practice a new group of cursive letters...the Hills and Valleys group. The letter "V" was introduced this week.  Spelling:  At the beginning of the week the grade 3s chose ten Christmas vocabulary words to study during the week. The students got several opportunities to work with the spelling list words including a Word Riddle Scavenger Hunt activity. and were given an informal test at the end of the week. They Practicing these words at home is strongly encouraged.    Writing:  This week, I read the book Reindeer of the Week by Rosie Greening to the class to serve as inspiration for our persuasive writing project this week.   The students are in charge of choosing or creating a reindeer that who they would like to be the winner.
