LITERACY
Reading:
Congratulations to this student for reaching the first pitstop by reading a total of 600 minutes!
Handwriting:
The students continue to practice a new group of cursive letters...the Hills and Valleys group. The letter "V" was introduced this week.
Spelling: At the beginning of the week the grade 3s chose ten Christmas vocabulary words to study during the week. The students got several opportunities to work with the spelling list words including a Word Riddle Scavenger Hunt activity. and were given an informal test at the end of the week. They Practicing these words at home is strongly encouraged.
Writing:
This week, I read the book Reindeer of the Week by Rosie Greening to the class to serve as inspiration for our persuasive writing project this week.
The students are in charge of choosing or creating a reindeer that who they would like to be the winner. On their planning page, the students answered detail generating questions about the reindeer they chose or created. Using sentence starters the students are in the process of writing a descriptive paragraph explaining why their reindeer is the best reindeer of the year.
MATHEMATICS
The students know how to describe/show a three digit number in expanded form. The Grade 3s can show a three digit number in expanded form using number words, place value blocks, drawing and numerals. With this knowledge, they were able to compare two numbers and decided which numeral is greater (or less). They used the symbols < , >, = while comparing the two numerals. The students are using the phrases greater than and less than to compare two numbers and determine by how much. For example, 458 is 100 more than 358.
The Grade 3s practiced their basic facts of -3 in the form of Mad Minutes. Their personal goal was to get more equations solved each day. On Thursday, we had our final Mad Minute of the week and most of the students improved on their scores compared to their scores on Monday. It is important to practice these basic facts at home every day!

SOCIAL STUDIES
The students learned the two new terms: goods and services. With this new knowledge they were able to dive into learning about India and their goods and services by looking at their imports, exports, natural resources and human resources. By looking at all these aspects of India's goods and services they were able to determine the quality of life in certain communities. The students were shocked to discover the differences between life in Canada and India, as well as similarities.
