Reading to Grades 1/2:





At the beginning of the week, I read the book The Polar Express by Chris Van Allsberg to the class. All of the activities were based on this fictional story. On the second day, the students completed a recall activity in which they had to specify the characters, setting, problem and solution of The Polar Express. Next, they were asked to find the definitions of "Polar Express"-specific vocabulary in a dictionary. These words included harness, sleigh, peaks and conductor.

LITERACY Reading:  Congratulations to this student for reaching the first pitstop by reading a total of 600 minutes!  Handwriting:   The students continue to practice a new group of cursive letters...the Hills and Valleys group. The letter "V" was introduced this week.  Spelling:  At the beginning of the week the grade 3s chose ten Christmas vocabulary words to study during the week. The students got several opportunities to work with the spelling list words including a Word Riddle Scavenger Hunt activity. and were given an informal test at the end of the week. Week 5

LITERACY Writing:  The students will begin their good copy for their elaborative detail writing project about the season of fall. The focus of this project was the students using their five senses to write with elaborative detail. Last week, the students were asked to find autumn specific words or phrases that and organized these words/phrases into a chart. From this chart, students were encouraged to use various sentence starters to make their paragraph come to life. The 3D students were so proud to share their extremely descriptive paragraphs with the class. They were fantastic! Reading/Phonics: Congratulations to the first 3D student to read a total of 600 minutes at home!!!! She hopped in her car and drove to the first pit stop - Canada! The grade 3s continued to work on identifying and using short vowel sounds in two syllable words. Week 12 & 13

LITERACY   Writing: The students started on their first entry of their All About Me book. The first entry is about "My Family".The grade 3s are following the paragraph structure we have been using in class: topic sentence, detail sentences and a concluding sentence. As a class, we brainstormed possible questions they might want to answer when writing detailed sentences about their families. They are learning to edit their own work once they are done writing such as checking for capital letters, appropriate punctuation, spell checking and making sure all of their sentences make sense.  Reading:  Congratulations to these 3D students for reaching a total of 600 minutes of reading at home!!!!
