Week 14
LITERACY
Reading: Congratulations to this student for reaching the second pitstop by reading a total of 1200 minutes!!!!
Handwriting: The students have begun to practice a new group of cursive letters...the Hills and Valleys group. The letters N and M belong to this group.
Phonics and Grammar: This week, the students continued to work with verbs. They were asked to look at four images and jot down two verbs for each image. Once this was completed, the students drew a picture of themselves and had to describe what they were doing (verbs!) in the drawing.
The chilly weather and snow falling down inspired our "Making Words" mystery word: SNOWFLAKE. Students are given a set of scrambled letters and asked to create 2,3,4,5,6 letter words using only the letters provided (ie. A E O F L K N S W). Once the students come up with a few of these words independently they pair up with a peer and try to come up with some more words together. Finally, we come together as a class and the students share the words they have created and try to figure out what the mystery word is.
Spelling: During the week the grade 3s learned one new spelling rule: -EY. The students get several opportunities to work with the spelling list words throughout the week and were given an informal test at the end of the week. Their spelling list reflected these words and included the high frequency Oddball Word FRIENDS and Bonus Word PRACTICE. Practicing these words at home is strongly encouraged.
MATHEMATICS
This week, the students learned another way to describe/show a three digit number in expanded form. The Grade 3s can show a three digit number in expanded form using number words, place value blocks, and numerals.
The Grade 3s practiced their basic facts of -1 in the form of Mad Minutes. Their personal goal was to get more equations solved each day. On Thursday, we had our final Mad Minute of the week and I am happy to report that almost all of the students improved compared to their scores on Monday and we had quite a few students that got 30/30!!!! Way to go 3D!

SOCIAL STUDIES
This week's focus was the geographical regions of India, as well as, the culture and traditions of India. They learned that India is a peninsula surrounded by the Indian Ocean. It has areas such as the Ganges Plains, Himalayan Mountain Range and even a desert! The students learned about celebrations such as Diwali and traditional dress such as saris and dhotis.
