Week 19 & 20

GLOBAL CITIZENSHIP PROJECT

The Grade 3s were asked to research the Australian Wildfires and share what they learned. The students decided they had to do something to help the poor animals and people of Australia, let's have an RBES Bake Sale with all proceeds going towards helping the animals and people of Australia.
Next, it was research time. The students were asked to get into group of three and choose an Australian animal that has been affected by the Australian wildfires. They needed to find information on the appearance, habitat, diet and some interesting facts of their animal.
Once they found the appropriate amount of information, the groups created a slideshow that will be shared with classes around the school early next week.

Lastly, the students shared their plan with the rest of the school at assembly and encouraged their peers to bring in $1 to buy something from the Bake Sale. Their goal is to reach $1000.

LITERACY

Book Study:
Last week, I read the book The Most Perfect Snowman by Chris Britt to the class to serve as inspiration for our upcoming writing project starting next week.
After reading the story, the students discussed ways they could "throw kindness" like snowballs. We had a kindness snowball fight in the classroom!

The next day, the students provided me with adjectives to design the perfect snowman as a group. I filled in the chart and included on what their snowman will look like.

Once we jotted down enough ideas, the students created their very own "perfect" snowman entirely out of construction paper. *I forgot to include take a picture of the finished product but I will include it in this post on Monday*

Spelling & Phonics:
Last week, the students learned the spelling patterns that make the long vowel sound of "I": IGH. Word work activities this week were focused around the words: night, bright, thigh, flight and moonlight. The oddball word was beautiful and the bonus word was vibration.
This week, the students learned two new spelling patterns that make the long vowel sound of "O": OW and OA. Word work activities this week were focused around the words: float, coach, window, elbow, tomorrow. The oddball word was before and the bonus word was Australia.

Writing:
The students are learning how to edit their sentences using the acronym CUPS to remind them about what to look for. CUPS stands for:
Capitals - Is there a capital at the beginning of your sentence? Are proper nouns capitalized?
Understanding - Does this make sense?
Punctuation - Does the sentence have the correct ending punctuation? Do you need a comma or apostrophe?
Spelling - Are all the words spelled correctly?

Reading:
Congratulations to this students for reaching the next pitstop by reading a total of 1200 minutes!
Congratulations to these students for reaching the next pitstop by reading a total of 1800 minutes!
Congratulations to these two students for reading over 4200 minutes!

MATHEMATICS

Last week, the students reviewed stacking two digit and three digit addition equations. The students were learned how important it was to stack ones with the ones and so on when getting ready to add. With their knowledge of 'stacking', students moved on to adding two digit numbers with and without regrouping. The students showed their addition by using place value blocks, drawings or digits.

The Grade 3s practiced their basic facts of -5 and -6 in the form of Mad Minutes. Their personal goal was to get more equations solved each day. On Thursday, we had our final Mad Minute of the week and all of the students improved on their scores compared to their scores on Monday. They rocked it this week! It is important to practice these basic facts at home every day!

SCIENCE

The students are so excited to learn about hearing and sound. During one activity, the students had to determine the location of the sound made by their classmates. They were asked to change the quality of sound in order to "trick" the person in the middle.

Next, the students brought in a secret object and put it inside a shaker egg. The class had to guess what was inside based on the quality of sound. Following that activity, the students focused on specific vocabulary that they would be using throughout the unit. The students put the definitions into their own words and decided on symbols for each word.

The students learned that without vibrations, there would be no sound. Knowing this, they created a model ear drum using an elastic band, grains of rice, a plastic cup and plastic wrap to demonstrate how sound travels through vibrations. They made loud noises around the "ear drum" or tapped the outer edges of the cup to create vibrations and watched the rice move around the plastic wrap as the ear drum vibrated.
